Two short films about the Native American experience in Nevada will have their campus premiere at the University of Nevada, Reno on Friday, April 7. The two films, "People of the Marsh" and "Under One Sky," are recent productions of the University’s Oral History Program in association with the media design and production department of Teaching and Learning Technologies (TLT).
The general public and campus community are invited to attend this free noon-time event in the William J. Raggio College of Education building, Room 2030. The two 30-minute films will be introduced by the film makers. A question-and-answer session will follow.
Participants include: Donna Cossette of the Fallon Paiute-Shoshone Tribe and Ralph Burns of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe; Catherine Fowler, anthropology professor; Tom King, director of the Oral History Program; and JoAnne Peden and Mark Gandolfo of the media design and production department, who produced and directed both films.
"People of the Marsh" features the stories and recollections of four members of the Fallon Paiute-Shoshone tribe, who share their knowledge of the tribe's vibrant past. This award-winning documentary was selected for screening at the 2005 American Indian Film Festival in San Francisco and was a finalist in the 2006 New York International Film and Video Festival. Its original premiere was held March 21, 2005 for the Fallon Paiute-Shoshone tribe, but this event marks its campus premiere.
"Under One Sky" is a collection of fascinating elders’ stories and creation stories, originally filmed as part of the Nevada State Museum's acclaimed exhibit, Under One Sky: Nevada's Native American Heritage. These video elements, which won the Oral History Association's 2003 Non-Print Media Award, have now been put together in a documentary that premieres at this University event.
This campus event, which includes free popcorn, is co-sponsored and presented by the University of Nevada Oral History Program, Teaching and Learning Technologies, the Anthropology Club, the Native American Organization, and the Center for Student Cultural Diversity.
