At the end of July 2006, Webmail was retired and is no longer available on the University’s Equinox server.
Before July 31st, Equinox Webmail users were asked to switch either to Wolfmail or a third-party email client. (University of Nevada, Reno employees also have the option of an Exchange account.)
To switch to Wolfmail, follow instructions linked from several pages on the Information Technology (IT) website and listed on the Wolfmail login page (https://wolfmail.unr.edu). On these pages, you will find instructions on how to:
o Migrate your address book from Webmail to Wolfmail
o Set up a Wolfmail vacation message
o Set up a Wolfmail forward
o Change your Wolfmail password
Why Did Webmail End?
The primary reason that IT upgraded to Wolfmail is security/support concerns. Webmail is compatible only with an older version of PHP, the programming language used for server-side applications, and has numerous security flaws. It also ran on an older operating system that is no longer supported. Most seriously, though, is that this older Webmail transports passwords in clear text for the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) utility (Gollem), while the newer version keeps passwords secure with FTPS encryption.
Wolfmail also offers improved functionality, including
o Shared calendaring
o More complete language support
o Server-side email filtering
o Support for multiple email servers
o Many smaller enhancements
Webmail Continues on Fallon
Webmail on Fallon (webmail.scsr.nevada.edu), which is run by the Nevada System of Higher Education, continues to be available to students.
