The University is on track to implement a new centralized telephone system in January 2007, replacing almost 100 separate key systems in buildings and departments on the main campus and several off-campus locations. The conversion will occur over Winter Break, prior to start of the spring semester.

Many in IT worked tirelessly over the summer to add the additional fiber and copper cable needed for the new system. Remodeling of sadly out-of-date telephone closets has also been underway.

At the same time, contract negotiations have been ongoing and were recently concluded with the two telephone vendor finalists. The final choice of vendor will be announced as soon as all contracts are signed.

PHONE NUMBERS ARE CHANGING!

It is important to note that approximately half of the telephone numbers on campus will change in January with the new system.

* Any telephone number with an extension will change, since there will be no more extensions.

* Other numbers may change, as well, if they are shared among more than one telephone.

* Be conservative in ordering stationery or business cards until the new telephone numbers have been assigned.

For updates on the telephone project, keep an eye on IT's New Phone System web site (link below).
