After 3 months of hard work by the University’s IT Division and several other Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) institutions, DeepFreeze software by Faronics has been added to IT’s growing collection of campus licensing agreements available to all UNR departments.
DeepFreeze has been used on campus for many years to “lock down” public and lab computers and return them to their original configuration when students log off. IT representatives spent many hours collecting information from departments all over campus to determine DeepFreeze usage. They also worked with Faronics and the Statewide Software Committee to negotiate pricing based on statewide numbers, which greatly reduces the cost for all participating institutions.
In the first year alone, UNR will save $14,613.78 for its DeepFreeze licensing and maintenance. In addition to the initial savings, the agreement includes unlimited growth of student use computers so any new machines will automatically be covered at no additional cost.
Administration and faculty-only computers are not covered by this agreement. Since the sole purpose of this software is to protect student resources, IT administration arranged for payment of UNR’s portion of the statewide DeepFreeze agreement from Student Tech Fee funds.
As a result, academic and student service units all across campus will now be able to protect their student-used computers at no cost to the department.
