Configure Outlook Express 6 for Exchange Accounts

Instructions for the UNR Exchange Server

*IMPORTANT NOTE! You must contact the Help Desk to arrange for IMAPS to be turned on for your Exchange account. Otherwise, the following instructions will not be successful for you.

In the following example, let's assume your name is Elizabeth Gardner, you have an account on the Exchange server and your email address is "elizabeth@unr.edu" (a fictitious email address). Please substitute your name and email address in the following instructions. The SMTP server names should be entered as they appear in these instructions.

Set Up the Account

  1. From the top menu bar, click Tools / Accounts. Click the Mail tab.

  1. Click the Add button and select Mail.

  1. In Display Name, type your real name (e.g., Elizabeth Gardner) and click Next.
  2. Type your email address (e.g., elizabeth@unr.edu) and click Next.
  3. Where it reads "My incoming mail server is a," chose IMAP. POP is not recommended.

  1. Incoming Mail Server:  For incoming mail, type: imapssl.unr.edu
  2. Outgoing Mail Server:  
    • IF you're accessing email from a computer located on the campus network, OR you are using a PPP connection,  the outgoing SMTP mail server is:

      smtp.unr.edu

    • IF you are accessing the Internet through another Internet Service Provider (ISP, likely from home), use the Outgoing SMTP Server associated with that ISP.  Please contact your ISP for details.  
  1. Click Next.
  2. Type your NetID username (e.g., elizabeth@unr.edu).
  3. Type your NetID password.
    • If you click the box to remember it, anyone on that machine can read your email.
    • If you leave the password block blank, you are prompted each time you check your mail. 

  1. Do NOT check the box which reads "Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA)".
  2. Click Next, then Finish.

Final Steps

  1. Click the Mail tab again.
  2. Click once on the imapssl.unr.edu account to highlight it.
  3. Click Properties (right-hand side of window).
  4. Select the Advanced tab.
  5. In the Incoming Mail section, check the box labeled "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)".

  1. In the text box to the right of the Incoming Mail section, enter 993. (It may already be there.)
  2. Click OK.
  3. Click Close.
  4. Click the Outlook Express Send and Receive button to check mail.
