Configuring Netscape for Twilight Email

These instructions apply to both Netscape 6 and 7.

  1. The Activation screen (above) opens.
    • If you choose not to activate the special Netscape features, which are not required for browsing or University email, click Cancel.
    • Click Cancel again on the popup window. This screen continues to display until you signup.
  2. The Netscape 6 screen opens. Select Tasks | Messenger to start the mail client.

  1. On the Server Information screen
  • Select IMAP for incoming server. This choice is recommended for two reasons:
    1. Original email remains on the server to ensure systematic backups.
    2. Copies of mail are downloaded only when requested. The download of large emails (photo attachments, etc) may be held until a faster connection is available (campus ethernet).
  • For Incoming Server (IMAP or POP), type twilight.unr.edu
  • For Outgoing Server
    • Type smtp.unr.edu - OR -
    • If you connect to the Internet via DSL, cable, or a commercial ISP, you MUST configure your Outgoing SMTP server for that connection. Contact your ISP for details.
  • Click Next to continue.

  1. On the User Name screen,
    • Enter your username (portion of email address to left of @). For example, for joeuser@unr.nevada.edu, username would be "joeuser."
    • Click Next to continue.

  1. On the Account Name screen
    • Select a name for this email account. Make it descriptive in case you want to add more accounts.
    • Click Next to continue.

  1. A summary window displays.
    • Review the account information.
    • Click Finish if OK.
    • Click Back if changes need to be made.

  1. Netscape attempts to access your email. You must check your settings first, so do not proceed!
    • Click Cancel.
    • NOTE: YOU MUST COMPLETE THESE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE ACCESSING EMAIL!
  2. Select Edit | Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings
    • Locate the name of your email account (in this example - Twilight Account).
    • Select Server Settings.
      • Make sure your settings match the image below. This allows Netscape to issue commands back to the server, a necessary function to avoid quota problems.
    • Click OK to save and start your email.
