Wolfmail Spam Filtering by Subject

Because all incoming University email believed to be spam is now tagged in the email's Subject line, the best way to set a spam filter is by the email's Subject.

  • If your email is on Twilight, the University uses the tag [LIKELY SPAM], as shown below

How to Apply a Subject Filter

To apply a Subject filter to your Wolfmail account, follow these steps:

  1. Log into Wolfmail
  2. Click Mail on the left side
  3. Click the Options button at top (not Options along the left side)
  4. Under Other Options, click Filters
  5. Next, click Edit your filter rules.
  6. Click the New Rule button
  7. In the box next to Rule Name, give the rule a name (e.g. Spam Filter)
  8. In the next section, below For an incoming message that matches, select the radio button corresponding to Any of the following
  9. In the Select a Field drop-down box, choose Subject. The screen updates and some new drop-down boxes display
  10. Leave the box next to Subject set to Contains
  11. In the adjoining text box, type LIKELY SPAM in all caps, and check Case Sensitive
  12. Repeat steps 9 and 10 to add another subject (e.g., Subject, Contains)
  13. In the adjoining text box, type SPAM WARNING in all caps, and again check Case Sensitive
  14. Leave the third Select a Field drop-down box alone.
  15. In the next section, below Do this, click the drop-down menu
  16. Typically, your options are Delete Message Completely or Deliver to Folder (recommended), since some legitimate messages may get tagged
    1. If you choose Deliver to Folder, you are asked to Select Target Folder.
    2. If you already have a target folder, choose it.
    3. Otherwise, click Create new folder and enter a name for this folder (e.g. SPAM).
  17. Click the check box for Stop checking if this rule matches
  18. Click the Save button
