Network Connection Policy

Policy:

This policy defines the types of devices may be connected to the University's computing network and those that are unauthorized.

  1. Authorized: Authorized network devices include:
    • Computers with a single network interface card using a standard category 5e cable (length of 25 feet or less)
    • Printers or print server
  1. Unauthorized: You may not connect any device that provides network-to-network connection services. Some examples are:
    • Hubs
    • Switches
    • Routers
    • Bridges
    • Firewalls
    • Virtual Private Networks (VPNs)
    • Wireless access points

    Wireless access points are put into the same category as hubs or bridges. Therefore they must not be connected to the University's campus network without prior consultation and approval from Information Technology.

Reason:

This policy is designed to protect the viability of the University's computing network.
