Symantec® Endpoint Protection

Protect your computer from the latest virus-related threats with Symantec® Endpoint Protection. Everyone (students, faculty, and staff) at the University of Nevada, Reno is eligible for a University-provided copy of this highly-rated antivirus software for their computer. Symantec Endpoint Protection is compatible with all versions of Windows. 

 

For University-Owned Computers:

All University-owned equipment should have the Symantec® Endpoint Protection installed. The software should be configured to update the virus definition file at least weekly.

Check Your AntiVirus Version

The current version of Symantec AntiVirus is 11.0.4000.2295.

Running an older version of the client can expose your computer to potential security risks.

To check what version of the client you're running, double-click the yellow shield icon in your system tray then go click on Help and Support and choose About... and note the version number displayed. If your client is not the current version, use the instructions on this page to get the latest version of the client installed on your computer.

 
  • Download the Symantec Installer appropriate for your system:
  • Contact Help Desk for installation assistance.
  • A"Do-IT-Yourself " CD which contains the necessary installation files is available for students in the Campus Residence Halls. CDs are available at the front desk of each residence hall.
  • A Symantec® Endpoint Protection CD may also be checked out from the Knowledge Center Circulation Desk if you do not live on campus, if you need to install the software in another off-campus location and the Symantec download does not work, or if you have a Mac. Checkout is for a 3-day period.

Self-Installation Instructions

IMPORTANT! If you have more than one antivirus software packaged installed on your computer, it can cause the machine to malfunction.  Common antivirus software packages include McAfee, Norton, AVG, and Sophos.  UNINSTALL any other antivirus software BEFORE installing Symantec AntiVirus.
Once you have obtained installation files for Symantec AntiVirus, follow the instructions below to install the software.

  • If you downloaded the installer, double-click the downloaded file to begin the installation. The installation is automated and should complete without your interaction. Reboot when prompted to do so. If prompted to run LiveUpdate, choose "Yes."
  • If you are using a CD, insert the CD and wait for Autorun to start the installation. If Autorun does not automatically start, browse to the index and double-click on the installation file. The installation is automated and should complete without your interaction. Reboot when prompted to do so. If prompted to run LiveUpdate, choose "Yes."
