Data Storage

Two types of data storage are available through the IT Division:

  1. Network Attached Storage (NAS) is available to any department on the University’s Supported Platform model for desktop computers.
    • One of the many advantages of being on the Supported Platform is that it reduces any worries you may have about backing up your files.
    • When you move to the Supported Platform, all of your department's data is copied to the NAS, a centralized server.
    • NAS directory security is based on each individual's NetID username and password. Only that person can access his or her own H: (home) drive.
    • Access to the G: (group) drive is defined by each department.
    • Data on the NAS is backed up to tape nightly.
    • Tapes are then stored off-campus on a weekly media-rotation basis.

For more information on the Supported Platform and the NAS, contact Desktop Services' Support Center at 775-682-5000 or email them at help@unr.edu.

  2. DataWorks, a unit within the University Libraries, has developed a core set of data-storage and analysis services to support faculty research and student coursework. These services include:
    • A distributed redundant Network Attached Server (NAS) with 4 terabytes of storage.
    • Access to accounts on the NAS can be fully restricted to specific people using standard network administration (permissions), or can be accessible from the Web. Permissions can also be set to allow or disallow read, write, execute.
    • Files on the NAS are regularly backed-up to tape. They can also be written to DVD or CD on a scheduled basis.
    • NAS files are accessible from the campus network and can be mapped.
    • A DVD tower is available for serving files to the Web.
