The Office of the Vice President for Information Technology provides leadership for the continued development of a modern information technology environment throughout the University of Nevada, Reno. The primary responsibility of this Office is the development and use of information technology in support of the University's vision for excellence in research, teaching, outreach and lifelong learning.

Steve Zink

Steven D. Zink

Vice President for Information Technology
and Dean of Libraries

Steve Zink, a tenured professor, serves as Vice President for Information Technology and Dean of Libraries at the University of Nevada, Reno.

As IT Vice President, Steve oversees all IT operations at the University, including academic and administrative computing, instructional technology and media, classroom services, and networking and telecommunications infrastructures (voice and data). The University's National Public Radio (NPR) station reports to him; he also serves as the University's representative on the board of directors of Reno's PBS television affiliate, KNPB.

In addition, he serves as Dean of the University Libraries. Steve reports to the President and serves on the University President's Council.

Steve holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in history, an M.L.S., and a Ph.D. in information systems.

The author, editor, or compiler of several books, Steve has authored over 120 other publications ranging from “The 1928 Presidential Campaign in Louisiana” and “Toward More Critical Reviewing and Analysis of CD-ROM User Software Interfaces” to “Information Technology Adoption in Jordanian Public-Sector Organizations.”

From his involvement in academic libraries, Steve was named in a 1990 study as one the nation’s 14 most “productive” academic librarians in writing for publication in refereed journals. He has also served as Principal Investigator for grants from the National Science Foundation related to Internet2 development.

Steve is the recipient of numerous awards and honors. In 1997, he was named outstanding alumnus of the Graduate School of Library and Information Sciences at Louisiana State University. Two of his writings on 20 th-century U.S. history have received awards. Steve is listed in numerous directories such as Who’s Who in the West, Who’s Who in Education, and Who’s Who in Information Technology.

From 1983 until July 2003, Steve served as the Editor-in-Chief of the leading, international, scholarly journal in the field of government information policy, the Journal of Government Information (Elsevier-Science). He is a long-time editorial board member of other scholarly journals and professional publications. Reflecting his interdisciplinary interests and expertise, Steve has served as a grant reviewer for both the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Science Foundation.

Over the past decade, Steve has held offices in several associations. He is a member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), American Society for Information Science and Technology (ASIST), and the Society for History in the Federal Government, among many others.

Steve, who was born in southern Indiana, has been at University of Nevada since 1980. He resides with his wife, Lois, in Mogul, a community in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, five miles west of Reno.
