Configuring Your Computer's IP Address

Static IP

Static IP is the configuration used for all University-owned computers on the UNR campus, excluding those using the wireless network.

IP Configuration Instructions

Windows XP

  1. Go to Start | Control Panel
  2. Click Switch to Classic View in the upper-left corner (see image below)

  1. Open Network Connections
  2. Right click Local Area Connection and go to Properties (see image below)

LAN

  1. In the box, "This connection uses the following items:" highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
  2. Click Properties directly below this box (see image below)

  1. Set the bullet to Use the following IP address: and fill in the following:
    • IP Address: To find your computer's IP address, go to the IT Home Page and look in the lower-right corner. Example: 134.197.XXX.XXX
    • Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0* (Note: The subnet mask is always the same 255.255.255.0 for all addresses on campus.)
    • Default Gateway: The Default Gateway is the always same as the IP address, but ends in 254. Example: 134.197.XXX.254
  2. Set the bullet to Use the following DNS server addresses: and fill in the following:
    • Primary DNS Server: 134.197.5.1
    • Secondary DNS Server: 134.197.6.1

  3. Click OK on both the TCP/IP Properties box and the Local Area Connection Properties box

Mac OS X

  1. Open System Preferences
  2. Under "Internet and Network" click Network (see image below)

  1. Select Network Status from the "Show" drop-down menu

  1. Select Built-in Ethernet and click Configure...

  1. On the "TCP/IP" tab, under "Configure IPv4" select Manually and fill in the following:
    • IP Address: To find your computer's IP address, go to the IT Home Page and look in the lower-right corner. Example: 134.197.XXX.XXX
    • Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0* (Note: The subnet mask is always the same 255.255.255.0 for all addresses on campus.)
    • Router: The Router is always the same as the IP, but ends in 254. Example: 134.197.XXX.254
  2. Under DNS Servers: 134.197.5.1
  3. Under Search Domains: unr.edu (see image below)

  1. Click Apply Now and close System Preferences

Basic Troubleshooting

Use the following as a checklist when troubleshooting a machine on the Static IP Network:

  1. Check the physical connections
    • Verify that the Ethernet cord is correctly plugged into the port and computer
  2. Check the network settings
    • Some settings, such as DNS servers, remain constant from machine to machine
  3. Clear the memory cache
  4. Reboot the computer
