PC PPP Instructions

These instructions are for PCs running Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP. (Note: If you have a Start button in the lower left corner of your screen, you are running a Windows operating system.)

PPP Installation - Basic Requirements

Your PPP account allows you access to the Internet. Basic access requires two components:

  1. Internet Connection -- Windows uses dial-up networking configured for University access to accomplish this. See Step Two for Windows configuration instructions and choose the appropriate version.
  2. Internet Browser -- Software to view the Internet is also known as an "Internet browser." All web pages of the University of Nevada, Reno gateway website are compliant with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act. For more informtion, see the University's browser policy.

STEP ONE:

Prepare for installation by jotting down the following information in advance.

  • PPP account email address: ______________________________
(Check the email you received indicating PPP account activation.)
  • PPP account username: __________________________________
(Enter email address to left of @ symbol.)
  • PPP account password: ___________________________________
(Case-sensitive. Contact the Help Desk if unknown.)
  • PPP account type: ______________________________________
    (NetID or Fallon)

STEP TWO:

Configure your dial-up networking for access to University modem banks.

STEP THREE:

Review this information on Internet browsers:

  • Most new computers have Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) installed as the default browser. If you choose to use this software, you do not need to install anything else. While all browsers allow unlimited access to the Internet, each offers different advantages/disadvantages.
  • Not all browsers are compatible with the University library or financial (CAIS/SIS/HRS) systems. Check with the Help Desk before installing new or updated versions of any browser.
  • IMPORTANT: Antivirus software is * extremely * important for connecting to the Internet. While Macintosh computers are less susceptible to viruses than Windows-based system, they can still transmit viruses. It is important that all machines associated with the University have up-to-date antivirus software installed. A University-provided download of Symantec AntiVirus is available at no cost to every computer user on campus.
