Wireless Access

ASUN President, Jeff Champagne, conducts business wirelessly on the Main Quad.In Spring 2008, UNR deployed a new wireless network based on Aruba equipment. The following is an overview of the three networks we offer and a description of each.


UNR-WPA

This network is recommended for all students and faculty. It uses the most recent wireless standards, WPA/TKIP or WPA2/AES along with Protected EAP (Extensible Authentication Protocol), a method to securely transmit passwords.

UNR

This network has been retired effective May 31, 2008.

UNR-Guest

This network provides unencrypted access to allow web browsing and VPN access for guest users. It is not recommended for day-to-day network activity. For guest access, please contact the Help Desk at 682-5000.

Wireless Coverage

Wireless access to the Internet is available in 34 campus buildings and 4 outdoor areas.

Policies Governing Wireless

  • Please read the computer and network policy statements from the University of Nevada, Reno and the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) that govern the use of the wireless networks.
  • University policies do not allow Peer-to-Peer (P2P) software to be used on our fixed or wireless networks. Your NetID will be disabled if it is associated with network traffic using this software.
