Information Technologies

Information Technologies (IT) provides computing, software, and voice communications support services to students, faculty, and staff across campus.

The department manages and supports software development, applications support and data warehousing, network services, and server support and management. The goal of the organization is to assist departments and colleges in automating any administrative or academic process within the University that can benefit from automation and thereby improve the efficiency and accuracy of University operations.

The faculty, staff and students of IT are responsible for core IT systems and services, including email, network security, NetID authentication, and IT communications, including the administration of this web site.

IT is led by Bird Vilseck, who is in charge of 9 major areas:

Network & Computer Security

Group secures UNR and UNSOM wired and wireless networks, firewalls and University owned and managed computer equipment.
Applications Support
Tracy Williams, Manager
A group of application specialists and programmers support multiple software applications across campus. They handle database administration for the SQL, Oracle, and WebCT servers, warehouse critical University information, and support Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S).
Network Operations
Shawn Franklin,
Manager
Group manages and monitors the campus networking infrastructure including: copper and fiber cable, switching and routing. They coordinate the installation of network wiring supporting data and voice.
Critical Systems
Tom Leathley, Manager
Group manages the central servers for email, files, web, backup, and application services on a combination of Windows and UNIX servers. The group also maintains and operates IT's Computer labs and consults on departmental lab configurations.
Phones and Teleconferencing

PBX Engineer
Group oversees telecomm services for the campus, including land lines and phone equipment in University buildings.
User Services
Tina Lundstrom, Manager
User Services is composed of IT's contribution to the Research and Computing Help Desk, Desktop Services and the System Administrators group.
System Administrators
Brad Johnson, Manager
IT Systems Administrators provide departmental-level technology support. Located throughout campus, SysAdmins are responsible for specific applications, servers, and project level support.
UNSOM User Services

Med User Services maintains a Computer Help Desk Center in the Savitt Medical Library in support of the teaching/clinical faculty and staff and students of the University of Nevada School of Medicine. 
Desktop Services & Support
Ken Hull, Manager

Desktop Services provides support to the administrative and academic departments across campus. Computer Services & Support includes help with:

  • needs evaluation and purchase of equipment
  • onsite installation and upgrades of hardware and software
  • warranty troubleshooting and repair, 
  • campus office phones and cell phones purchase and support
  • Design, installation and maintenance of student use computer labs
  • purchase, networking and repair of printer/copiers
Help Desk
Tina Lundstrom, Manager
In collaboration with UNR Library Services, the Computing Help Desk provides multi-faceted support to the faculty, staff and students. Help is available via walk-up service desks in the Knowledge Center, online and through an advanced call center.
UNSOM Clinical IT

Provides computer and networking support to clinics located statewide. 
iNtegrate (PeopleSoft) Applications
Michael Bakker, Project Manager
Group of application developers, business analysts, system administrators and database administrators responsible for the iNtegrate Project implementation at UNR.  As part of the iNtegrate Project, the team (with input and cooperation from SCS, IT and the user community) will implement the following modules within the PeopleSoft Campus Solutions product: Recruiting and Admissions, Student Records, Academic Advising, Financial Aid and Student Financials
