BlackBerry Basics
Welcome to the University of Nevada, Reno's BlackBerry Basics page. It is designed to help set up a BlackBerry device and answer some frequently asked questions.
Important Notes:
- What is a BlackBerry and how does it work?
- A BlackBerry is an end-to-end wireless email solution that allows access to your Outlook Inbox, Calendar, Contacts, and Tasks with full wireless synchronization. The BlackBerry Server constantly communicates with the campus Exchange server (that talks to Outlook, among other email clients).
- As soon as something comes into your Outlook for Exchange email, the BlackBerry server gets a copy and sends it to your device through the Internet. Your device receives that information through the Internet using your carrier's preferred network.
- The process works in reverse when you make changes on your BlackBerry device that need to be copied into your Outlook account, e.g., if you send a message that needs to be copied to your Sent items, or if you add a contact to your Contacts list.
- Which models do we support at UNR?
- IT supports any BlackBerry device from Sprint, Nextel, or Cingular.
- However, IT requires that Blackberry users have access to full functionality on the main campus Exchange server. Non-Exchange accounts may work, but functionality is limited and not supported. Your Exchange account must be on the campus Exchange server.
- Should I upgrade my older BlackBerry or its software?
- It may not be necessary to upgrade the hardware, but it is necessary to upgrade BlackBerry's operating system (OS) software to the latest version (min. v4.0 or v2.7 for Java and C++ devices, respectively).
- Older versions lack some features, and can cause synchronization issues. For this reason, IT provides very limited support for BlackBerry devices running older versions.
- Some features of the new BlackBerry OS include full wireless capability, HTML browser, enhanced attachment viewers (including a picture viewer) and full wireless synchronization. This upgrade is free, and can be downloaded from the support section of your wireless provider.
- How do I activate my BlackBerry on the campus email system?
- It is activated as part of the process detailed below. Make sure you have all tasks completed in the BlackBerry Checklist.
BlackBerry Checklist:
- If you don't already have one, apply for an Exchange account at the HelpDesk. Non-Exchange accounts may work, but functionality is limited and not supported. Your Exchange account must be on the campus Exchange server.
- Order your BlackBerry through IT Telcomm (Jennie Belka at 682-5047) and purchase an unlimited data plan, which costs $49.99 per month
