Satellite Downlinking

Satellite downlinks are often used for electronically bringing conferences and large professional meetings to campus. Many times, the video and audio are made interactive by making live phone contact and participating remotely, rather than being passive observers of the proceedings.

A satellite downlink is when an information stream, usually audio and video, is received by large dishes on campus, routed through an IT control room, and sent anywhere on campus.

A satellite uplink is when an information stream, again often in form of video and audio, is sent to an orbiting satellite for distribution to those receiving the content through downlinking.

Due to the high cost of satellite time, this option is generally used for only the most important events or in cases of extreme distance or remoteness, where other telecommunications methods are not viable or available.

The University is able to receive and send signals on both C and KU bands.
