Welcome to the University of Nevada, Reno's Smart Phone Basics page.

  1. What is a "smart phone" and how does it work?
    • The ATT Tilt™ and Samsung Blackjack II™ are cell phones that easily integrate with leading corporate and personal email applications integrated on the phone, such as Microsoft Office Outlook Mobile and Microsoft Exchange Server, GoodLink™ from Good Technology, Cingular Xpress Mail and MSN Hotmail.
    • In addition to email, they feature popular wireless messaging applications including MSN Messenger and Cingular's multimedia messaging service (MMS).
  2. Which models do we support at UNR?
    • IT currently supports the ATT Tilt ™ and Samsung Blackjack II™ models, among other PDA-style "smart phones."
  3. How do I activate my "smart phone"?
    • It is activated as part of the process detailed below. Make sure you have all tasks completed in the activation checklist.
    Activation Checklist:
    • If you don't already have one, apply for an Exchange account at the HelpDesk. Non-Exchange accounts may work, but functionality is limited and not supported. Your Exchange account must be on the campus Exchange server.
    • Order your phone through Jennie Belka at 682-5047
      • You must also purchase an unlimited data plan from your telephone provider
    • When your phone arrives, it is activated and you are called for pick up
    • To configure your phone, contact Desktop Services' Field Support
  4. How do I configure the owner information?
    • Start > 9 (More) > 1 (Settings) > 9 (More) > 4 (Owner Information)
  5. How do I sync with my desktop PC?
    • Setup ActiveSync
    • Start – 6 (ActiveSync) > Menu Button > 1 (Options)
    • Select the PC to which you want to sync remotely
    • Check “Use mobile schedule to sync with this PC”
    • Check “Sync with this PC during manual sync”
  6. How do I sync with Exchange?
    • Start > 6 (ActiveSync) > Menu > 1 (Options) > 3 (Server Settings) > 4 (Connection)
    • Enter User name (NetID)
    • Enter Password (check Save password)
    • Enter Domain (UNR)
    • Server Name: owa.unr.edu (check "This server uses an SSL connection")
    • Note: on the ATT Tilt phone you will need to download Active Sync software.
